Background[]
- The song was first announced on Eilish's social media, as on July 29, 2020, she posted a 20-second snippet on her Instagram story.[1]
- In an e-mail sent out on the day of release for "my future", Eilish stated that:
“ | When we wrote this song, it was exactly where my head was at – hopeful, excited and a [crazy] amount of self-reflection and self-growth. But recently, it has also taken on a lot of new meaning in the context of what's happening in the world now. | ” |
- While she also saying in a Zane Lowes interview that:
“ | I spent years and years relying on someone and as soon as I didn’t have a someone, I got somebody else. And I’m not talking about relationships, I’m talking about everything. I could never be alone. I couldn’t take my own company. I just felt like I needed that growth. I needed a moment to myself and I got it. It was hard, it’s so much harder than you think to not rely on people, to just have yourself to rely on. It's weird, it’s not something you’d think about being hard but when you’re in that "alone zone", it's a new feeling. I really wanted to talk about it. Everything is about love. There’s nothing that talks about being alone is really powerful and you grow a lot and you learn a lot and it’s not bad. | ” |

Spotify Synopsis[]
“ | "my future" is [a track that] I hold very close to my heart. It wasn't really the first song we wrote after the album but it was to me, like it felt like the beginning of a new world and a new feeling. It's cute to me now because I listen to it and the girl singing it—which is me [back] then—is singing about me [right] now, and that makes me feel good. I listen to it now, thinking about the future me and it gives me hope and it excites me. | ” |

Theme[]
Billie claimed in an e-mail that the song was about loving what's upcoming in your life because you have a hold on your future and are going to make an act to make change for the better,
“ | The future feels uncertain and crazy right now, but I think we need to be ready to put the work in, and if we do that, we should be hopeful and excited for our future. I have to keep reminding myself that the future is ours, and I know we want to do everything we can to make it better for everyone in the world and for the world itself. It's up to us to change things now. Not only for us, but for future generations. Stay hopeful. | ” |
She later stated in an New Music Daily Radio interview hosted by Zane Lowe,
“ | There’s still hope in it. We will get out of this eventually. It might take years, but we’ll be okay eventually. | ” |

Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
I can't seem to focus
And you don't seem to notice
I'm not here
I'm just a mirror
You check your complexion
To find your reflections
All alone
I had to go
[Pre-chorus]
Can't you hear me?
I'm not coming home
Do you understand?
I've changed my plans
[Chorus]
'Cause I, I'm in love with my future
Can't wait to meet her
And I, I'm in love, but not with anybody else
Just wanna get to know myself
[Verse 2]
I know supposedly I'm lonely now (I'm lonely now)
I know I'm supposed to be unhappy without someone (someone)
But aren't I someone? (aren't I someone?)
I'd like to be your answer (be your answer)
'cause you're so handsome (so handsome)
[Pre-chorus]
But I know better
Than to drive you home
'Cause you'd invite me in
And I'd be yours again
[Chorus]
But I, I'm in love with my future
And you don't know her
And I, I'm in love, but not with anybody here
I'll see you in a couple years
