"Bored" is a single by Billie Eilish. It was released as a single on March 30, 2017 and was later included in the "13 Reasons Why" soundtrack.
Background[]
The song is mainly about a relationship that’s going nowhere. In an interview with “Elle” magazine, Billie spoke about the music video and said:
"The video was inspired by being trapped in a relationship that was going nowhere … when you’re in such a toxic place with someone and you’re treated so badly for such a long time that eventually you’re used to it."
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
The games you played were never fun
You'd say you'd stay but then you'd run
[Pre-Chorus]
Giving you what you're begging for
Giving you what you say I need
I don't want any settled scores
I just want you to set me free
Giving you what you're begging for
Giving you what you say I need, say I need
[Chorus]
I'm not afraid anymore
What makes you sure you're all I need?
Forget about it
When you walk out the door and leave me torn
You're teaching me to live without it
Bored, I'm so bored, I'm so bored, so bored
[Verse 2]
I'm home alone, you're God knows where
I hope you don't think that shit's fair
[Pre-Chorus 2]
Giving you all you want and more
Giving you every piece of me
But I won't if I can't afford
I just want you to love for free
Can't you see that I'm getting bored?
Giving you every piece of me, piece of me
[Chorus]
I'm not afraid anymore
What makes you sure you're all I need?
Forget about it
When you walk out the door and leave me torn
You're teaching me to live without it
Bored, I'm so bored, I'm so bored, so bored
[Pre-Chorus]
Giving you what you're begging for
Giving you what you say I need
I don't want any settled scores
I just want you to set me free
Giving you what you're begging for
Giving you what you say I need, say I need
[Chorus]
I'm not afraid anymore
What makes you sure you're all I need?
Forget about it
And when you walk out the door and leave me torn
You're teaching me to live without it
Music Video[]
The music video was released on June 26, 2017, directed by Miles & AJ. Eilish came up with the concept for it. The video sees her climbing and hanging off a ladder that seems to climb forever into endless white space, while she is dressed in a blue tracksuit with matching high-top Nikes
The video begins with Billie climbing a ladder in a liminal white space which represents a relationship that isn't going anywhere. In the chorus when she sings the line "I'm not afaid anymore" the ladder becomes horizontal and instead of climbing Billie sits down looking directly at the camera, representing her conquering her fears and accepting that this relationship will no go anywhere.
The 'ladder' motif is also used throughout the EP: 'dont smile at me', released soon after.
