"Born Blue" is an unreleased song by Billie Eilish. It was scrapped from her sophomore studio album, Happier Than Ever. The song had never been heard before by people outside of Eilish’s team before being reworked for the release of her third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. It is featured in the song "BLUE" as the second half.
No official demo or snippet of the Happier Than Ever version exists besides a video of Finneas singing it.
Background[]
The only snippet of the song before being reworked for HIT ME HARD AND SOFT is of Finneas singing it in the background of one of Eilish’s Instagram stories on November 30, 2020.[1]
On August 9, 2021, Eilish held a Q&A on her Instagram stories. She replied to a question asking "Are there any songs that didn't make it onto the album?", with an image taken on February 2, 2021 of what seems to be the initial Happier Than Ever track list. It revealed that this song was originally the sixth track. It was not marked as explicit.[2]
On the same day, Eilish answered another question asking "When did you start writing 'Billie Bossa Nova'?", with a screenshot of her voice memos, which revealed "Born Blue" being worked on in June 2020.[3]
Speaking in 2024 to Zane Lowe for Apple Music, following the release of Eilish's third studio album, Eilish and her brother Finneas spoke about "Born Blue", stating that it was scrapped ultimately due to the lack of time available. Eilish later added that the song was largely unfinished when it was cast aside to prioritise other songs on the album.[4]
