"Happier Than Ever" (originally titled "Away From You") is the sixth single and fifteenth track on Billie Eilish's sophomore studio album Happier Than Ever. It is marked as explicit.
Theme[]
Happier Than Ever tells the story of Eilish's abusive ex-lover, Brandon Quention Adams (also known as 7: AMP, Que, or Q) and his horrific actions throughout their relationship. Eilish introduced a more inside-look on the mess of the relationship in her 2021 documentary, Billie Eilish: The World's A Little Blurry,
“ | (on the phone with Adams) Where are you right now? [You're] hungover? You didn't drive home, right? You did? Why? You said you wouldn't do that. I'm mad that you did that shit. I know, I'm glad you told me but I don't want you to do that. Because you don't take me seriously when I say that. I just want you [to be] safe. You know that. | ” |
Eilish sang a portion of Happier Than Ever in the documentary film as well. Just after the scene, Eilish talked more about the relationship.
“ | I just wasn't happy. And I didn't want the same things he wanted and I don't think that's fair for him. I don't think you should be in a relationship, super excited about certain things that the other person couldn't care less about. There was just a lack of effort, I think. I literally was just like, “Dude, you don't even have enough love to love yourself, you can't love me.” I do love him, though, which is what made it harder, ‘cause I'm not over him. I didn't find someone else. I didn't stop having love for him. I just, like, spent time away from him for a little bit and I was like, wow, I'm missing so much because I'm worried about you all the time. | ” |

Fans began harassing Adams virtually after this all was revealed and after the song's release, sending threats and other harmful messages, Eilish told her fans to calm down and be nice no matter what. Adams posted online to an Instagram story in attempt to explain himself in the midst of all this.
“ | People fail to realize ive been dealing with my brothers death. Especially around that time when it was fresh. Sometimes you have to be alone to cope. Sometimes people disagree and dont want the same things as one another. Its on you to understand theres several point of views to a situation . Anyone who knows me knows where my heart is. I stay with a smile on my face even when im hurting. We push through the pain. [no love is ever lost] but I refuse to be bashed. [all sic] | ” |

Spotify Synopsis[]
“ | Happier Than Ever [is] probably the most therapeutic song I've ever written or recorded, like ever, ever, ever ‘cause I just screamed my lungs out and could barely talk afterwards, which was very satisfying to me somehow. I had wanted to get those screams out for a very long time and it was very nice to. | ” |

Lyrics[]
[Chorus]
When I'm away from you
I'm happier than ever
Wish I could explain it better
I wish it wasn't true, mmm
[Verse 1]
Give me a day or two
To think of something clever
To write myself a letter
To tell me what to do, mm-mm
Do you read my interviews?
Or do you skip my avenue?
When you said you were passin' through
Was I even on your way?
I knew when I asked you to (When I asked you to)
Be cool about what I was tellin' you
You'd do the opposite of what you said you'd do (What you said you'd do)
And I'd end up more afraid
Don't say it isn't fair
You clearly weren't aware that you made me miserable, ooh
So if you really wanna know
[Chorus]
When I'm away from you (When I'm away from you)
I'm happier than ever (I'm happier than ever)
Wish I could explain it better (Wish I could explain it better)
I wish it wasn't true, mmm
[Verse 2]
You called me again, drunk in your Benz
Drivin' home under the influence
You scared me to death but I'm wastin' my breath
'Cause you only listen to your fuckin' friends
I don't relate to you
I don't relate to you, no
'Cause I'd never treat me this shitty
You made me hate this city
[Verse 3]
And I don't talk shit about you on the internet
Never told anyone anything bad
'Cause that shit's embarrassing, you were my everything
And all that you did was make me fuckin' sad
So don't waste the time I don't have
And don't try to make me feel bad
I could talk about every time that you showed up on time
But I'd have an empty line 'cause you never did
Never paid any mind to my mother or friends, so I
Shut them all out for you 'cause I was a kid
[Outro]
You ruined everything good
Always said you were misunderstood
Made all my moments your own
Just fuckin' leave me alone
[Breakdown, screamed]
Fuck you
Ahhhh!
Fuck you
Ahhhh!
Fuck you
Fuck you
