"SKINNY", originally titled "CRY"[1], is a track by Billie Eilish that features on her third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. It was released alongside the rest of the album on May 17, 2024.
Background[]
The title "SKINNY" was first revealed in a leaked tracklist in a later deleted article section from Rolling Stone.[2]
Theme[]
"SKINNY" reflects on some of Eilish's perceived insecurities, including body image issues and societal pressures, previously also explored in some of her previous work. It also explores the conflict between internal and external perception of beauty, along with talk of falling in love and aging.
During an Interview with COLORS, she stated that the song was written prior to 'What Was I Made For?'
- " I think of them as kind of like sister songs. 'Skinny' was made first, and to be real, What was I Made For would never have been written if we hadn't made 'Skinny'. This was a period of time where Finneas and I were very uninspired and had really low self-esteem. We hadn't written one whole song for the album at all, and we'd been working for like months, and we'd made pieces of stuff, but kind of were nervous that we didn't have it in us anymore."
- "It was also really special because so many of the lyrics were things that I had been feeling and hadn't been able to see that I was even feeling, or at least express. And then, honestly, like, 2 or 3 weeks later, we saw the Barbie movie and we were told to write the Barbie song. We sat down and wrote almost all of 'what was I made for?' in like under two hours, if not one hour. I don't know, it's just really special to think about that those songs wouldn't be anything without each other in a way."

- Nearing the end of the song, it features an orchestral version ( this is heard meanwhile each chorus plays, although, it is not orchestral ) of “THE GREATEST” and later fades into “LUNCH“
