"True Blue" is an unreleased song by Billie Eilish. This was recorded during the don't smile at me sessions, but was scrapped. It was performed live previously in concert during a number of her tour dates, and was later rerecorded and reworked for the song "BLUE".
The full demo was leaked on February 1, 2022.
Theme[]
"True Blue" details the heartache of trying to move on from a lover following being previously emotionally attached to them. It begins with Eilish detailing struggling with nighttime depression, distracting herself from thoughts of her lost lover by counting the tears on her cheek like sheep to try and fall asleep.
She recounts vague memories, such as a lake in the park and sneaking out late at night to try and meet with her former lover. All the while, she sings melancholically that despite her ex-partner having effortlessly moved on from her, she finds it difficult to do the same.
Leak History[]
- The full demo of the song was leaked on February 1, 2022.
- The track original file name is "TRUE_BLUE_V1" indicating that the first version of the song was leaked.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Lights out
You're not here holding me
I count
Every tear down my cheek
Instead of sheep
[Verse 2]
Sleep walk
Find myself on your street
Three knocks
Ring the bell then I leave
[Chorus]
I try to live in black and white but I'm so blue
I'd like to mean it when I say I'm over you
But that's still not true
[Verse 3]
Cold days
Frozen lake in the park
Old ways
Made mistakes, made our mark
Now we’ve gone dark
[Verse 4]
Bad dreams
Might not mean anything
But you seem
Not to need anything
[Chorus]
I try to live in black and white but I'm so blue
I'd like to mean it when I say I'm over you
But that's still not true
[Bridge]
I'm still so blue
True blue, true blue, hey
True blue
[Chorus]
I try to live in black and white but I'm so blue
I'd like to mean it when I say I'm over you
I try to live in black and white but I'm so blue
I'd like to mean it when I say I'm over you
But that's still not true
[Outro]
And I'm still so blue
True blue, true blue, hey
True blue

Trivia[]
- It is commonly mistaken that this song and "another stupid song" are the same song as photographer RazorStarzz previously mistakenly labelled a live performance of "Another Stupid Song" as "True Blue".
- From April 2, 2024, lyrics from the song began appearing on billboards in West Hollywood, reading "I try to live in Black and White" and "But I'm so blue", respectively. This sparked rumors that Eilish would finally release the song.[2]
- Lyrics were taken from "True Blue", along with its melody, and re-recorded for Eilish's later released track "BLUE" as part of her third studio album.
