What was I made for?

– What Was I Made For?, Billie Eilish

"What Was I Made For?" is a single by Billie Eilish. It was released as a single on July 13, 2023 as part of the official "Barbie" Movie Soundtrack.

Background[]

  • Eilish had started leaving easter eggs about the song on her Instagram around Spring 2023; posting Barbie-related images on her official Instagram[1] and leaving release-related information about the song[2]. This led many fans to speculate about when new music would be released.
  • On July 6, 2023 she publicly announced the song’s release on her official social media accounts.[3][4]
  • On July 11, 2023 she announced that the single’s release would be accompanied by an official music video.[5]
  • “What Was I Made For?” was also used in promotional material for the Barbie film prior to its release.[6]

Theme[]

The lyrics of "What Was I Made For?" are about questioning our awareness of ourselves and place in the world. The speaker in this song, in line with the film's plot, would likely be the character Barbie. Eilish expresses Barbie’s feelings as she gains a new understanding of her life and wonders what her role is within it. It shows elements of the philosophic dilemma “Why are we here?”, contextualized in Barbie’s individual life.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I used to float
Now I just fall down
I used to know
But I'm not sure now
What I was made for
What was I made for?

[Verse 2]
Takin' a drive, I was an ideal
Looked so alive, turns out I'm not real
Just somethin' you paid for
What was I made for?

[Chorus]
'Cause I, I
I don't know how to feel
But I wanna try
I don't know how to feel
But someday, I might
Someday, I might

[Post-Chorus]
Mm, mm, ah
Mm, mm, mm

[Verse 3]
When did it end?
All the enjoyment
I'm sad again
Don't tell my boyfriend
It's not what he's made for
What was I made for?

[Chorus]
'Cause I, 'cause I
I don't know how to feel
But I wanna try
I don't know how to feel
But someday, I might
Someday, I might

[Outro]
Think I forgot how to be happy
Somethin' I'm not, but somethin' I can be
Somethin' I wait for
Somethin' I'm made for
Somethin' I'm made for
